I?ve been working at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) for 16 months now as the Agency Planner. My role revolves heavily around the establishment of the three new Veterans Homes, the agency strategic plan, and a number of other planning events and projects, big and small. I came here after working for the Minnesota Army National Guard for 20 years, most of which was fulltime in some capacity, fulltime employee, temporary duty, deployments, etc.
One of the reasons I joined MDVA as my first stop after the National Guard was because I already knew some people at MDVA. It?s always nice knowing someone at a new place. It?s also nice to have the ability to ask questions such as: ?Do you like it here?? ?Are you respected?? ?Do you feel like what you do matters?? I?ve been here for 16 months, so the answer to those questions reinforced my reason to stay. In the short time I?ve been with MDVA, I?ve had the opportunity to meet many new people across all three divisions: Healthcare, Programs & Services, and Central Office. All professional. And all give a damn about taking care of Veterans.
And that?s the second reason I took this opportunity. I?m a Veteran. My father and uncles were/are Veterans (from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam). My father volunteered often at the Minneapolis Veterans Home before he became unable and eventually passed. It was during this time that I learned about MDVA, if only briefly. I knew a few of the Veterans (friends of my father) who were at the Home. And that?s when I saw the value of MDVA. It wasn?t just another care facility. It was a place where people actually cared for Veterans.
So now it?s my chance to help in that care for our Veterans. I get to help chart our future through strategic planning to ensure we meet the needs of Minnesota Veterans now and into the future. And I get to do it with people who give a damn about Veterans. And that means a lot to me.
