John, BREAKING: Minnesota is on the verge of passing new legislation prohibiting foreign-influenced corporations from spending money in elections. Last night, the Minnesota House of Representatives approved the Democracy for the People Act, a comprehensive democracy protection bill that includes a provision prohibiting foreign-influenced corporations from spending money in Minnesota state or local elections. It defines foreign-influenced corporations as any company that is owned five percent by multiple foreign owners, or one percent by a single foreign owner. The inclusion of this provision in the Democracy for the People Act highlights what we already know: for our democracy to work by and for we, the people, we must ensure that foreign interests cannot use their shares in multinational corporations to influence our elections. Sign our petition and urge Congress to end foreign-influenced corporate spending in U.S. elections. Across the country, corporations with significant foreign ownership have used their money to influence our elections, circumventing direct bans on foreign influence enshrined in federal law. Companies like Amazon and Airbnb have exploited a loophole created by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision to advance political agendas in their favor. But states are starting to fight back. The provision banning multinational corporations from influencing our elections, based on the model we’ve successfully passed in Seattle, is now under consideration in state legislatures across the country, including Minnesota, California, Massachusetts, and New York, as well as the U.S. House of Representatives. This new development in Minnesota signals a big step forward in the fight to restore faith and confidence in our democracy. By banning multinational corporations from pouring unlimited sums of money into our elections, we are ensuring that our democracy is truly of, by, and for the people. Sign if you agree: It’s time to end foreign-influenced corporate spending in U.S. elections. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
