Legislative Update
Friends and Neighbors,
We?re about to have an expensive few weeks for Minnesotans as omnibus budget bills start to come to the House Floor. The first to the floor this week was the Higher Education bill which includes an 18.5% increase in spending even as we are seeing enrolment down. This is what we will likely see in most of the omnibus budget bills with double-digit budget increases.
To fund these new expenses there have already been over $4 Billion in new taxes and fees proposed. This is ?Absolutely Bonkers? that when the state has a 17.5 Billion Dollar Surplus there would be any consideration for tax increases. Minnesotans are already some of the highest taxed in the country. Many other states have used their surpluses to provide tax relief, yet Minnesota will be doing the exact opposite.
In the few tax credits the House DFL is proposing most of them are intended to go to individuals who don?t pay in any state income taxes. This is a clear redistribution of wealth and misplaced priorities as every Minnesotan is hurting with constrained budgets. That doesn?t even include the ?Walz Checks? that after campaigning on seem to have lost their place in the governor's budget framework in favor of more government spending.
We will be on the floor a lot the next few weeks. You can stay up to date with the action with a live stream hosted by House Media on their Youtube Channel. If you?re watching please feel free to send me your comments or stories that might be relevant to the topic at hand. Personal stories can be very impactful on the House Floor.
Have a great weekend!
