#LeyDeRompientes ("Law of the Breakers") aims to legally protect Chile's surf breaks. Save The Waves Coalition has joined forces with our Chilean partners in the international alliance to strengthen this bill under the State of Chile and preserve country's surf breaks for future generations.

** Background

Ocean pollution, explosive real estate and the lack of regulation of coastal zones have become a real threat for surfing areas, despite their importance in the social and economic development for local communities.
Chilean organizations such as the Arica Surf Association (ASA) and Fundación Rompientes and Fundación Punta de Lobos have already taken the first steps in the protection of surf breaks. In 2018, they introduced 'Ley de Rompientes' to Congress, a bill that seeks the conservation of waves, replicating the successful case implemented by their Peruvian neighbors who have protected 33 surf breaks, including the Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve.
This law is designed to prevent any activity or proposal that would alter the attributes that allow for breakable, surfable waves.
This is a historic and massive step forward for coastal conservation in Chile! We need our entire global coalition to step forward as a community and take action today.
