Dear Neighbors,

We invite you to join us in celebrating DC Emancipation Day with two impactful events.

On Saturday, April 15th, 2023, join us for the Emancipation Day parade, where residents from all over the city will come together to commemorate The DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, which ended slavery in Washington, DC and freed 3,100 individuals. It will be a fun-filled event for all ages.

On Monday, April 17th, 2023, we will be hosting a powerful discussion on The Root of the Racial Wealth Gap and the Role of Reparations in Washington, DC. This event is being held in partnership with the Greater Washington Community Foundation and will feature a panel of cross-sector leaders who are attuned to issues of reparative justice. This discussion will address the ongoing racial wealth gap and the need for reparations to help address this issue.

Councilmember McDuffie has recently introduced the Reparations Foundation Fund and Task Force Establishment Act of 2023, which aims to establish a 9-member task force to study and develop reparations proposals for African Americans in the District of Columbia. This measure acknowledges that we have not achieved racial equality and that official recognition of the role of government-sanctioned slavery, segregation, and other actions in denying wealth-building opportunities to Black Americans is necessary.

We hope you can join us for both events as we further our efforts towards economic justice in the District of Columbia. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Team McDuffie
