My name is David Segal, and I’m the executive director of Demand Progress.
I’m writing to you today because I want to be completely honest with you about where things stand with Demand Progress right now.
The upshot is this: Our recent fundraising hasn’t been as strong as we’d budgeted for, and that’s a problem. In fact, so far this month, we’ve raised less than 20 percent of our monthly goal — and we’re already halfway through the month.
Unfortunately, this is part of an overall trend that’s been reported by organizations across the progressive movement over the last two years. Since Donald Trump left office, a lot of people have taken a step back from politics. Frankly, it’s understandable that after four years of one all-out emergency after another, people needed a break.
But while donations to Demand Progress and others are down, the threats we face haven’t gone anywhere. The far-right Supreme Court has declared war on basic rights from voting to abortion, and a rising authoritarian streak in the Republican Party is attacking democracy itself.
That’s why I’m writing to you today with an urgent request: Will you donate today to help Demand Progress meet our critical fundraising goals and continue fighting against the far-right and corporate special interests attacking our democracy?
Demand Progress fills a key role providing policy expertise on key issues while also mobilizing grassroots pressure on policy-makers at the key moments when your voices are most effective. Our mission is to protect the democratic character of the internet — and wield it to contest concentrated corporate power and hold the government accountable.
With more than 1.5 million affiliated activists and over 30 million total actions taken, we’ve led successful campaigns to defend net neutrality, rein in big tech companies like Facebook and Google, and increase the transparency and accountability of our government.
But unless we can make up for these recent fundraising shortfalls, it’s only a matter of time before we’ll have to cut back somewhere. That’s the simple reality of budgeting as a nonprofit organization.
