Recognizing Dr. Edina Renfro-Michel -- Last week at the Boonton Council meeting, Ward 2 Councilwoman Dr. Edina Renfro-Michel, who is battling cancer, announced she is stepping down effective this week. Her announcement was met with a standing ovation from her colleagues on Council and the audience.
She was first elected in 2017, a year when many Democratic women in Morris County and across the country stepped up as newcomers to run for public office. She won again in 2019 and 2021.
During her tenure, she successfully brought in more than one million dollars in grant funding for historic preservation and recreation. These grants funded a host of projects, including the creation of the Boonton Iron Works Historic District; planning for the preservation and trails at Grace Lord Park; and pedestrian safety and plans for the Upper Plane Street Parking Lot.
Another highlight of her service was spearheaded the rebuilding of Pepe Park Playground. This playground built on a former Superfund site caught the eye of News12. Watch an interview with Edina at the playground's reopening.
We wish to express our deep thanks to Edina for her unwavering commitment to public service and for her grace and courage in the face of health challenges.
