Friend,
Passing the Inflation Reduction Act was just the beginning. With billions of dollars of investments flowing from the federal government, states have the historic opportunity to pick up the baton and supercharge the clean energy transition.
And we’re seeing it happen in Michigan first-hand. I'm writing to you following the first-ever Michigan Healthy Climate Conference in Detroit, where Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlighted momentum around the clean energy transition in the state. And Michigan Senate leaders just introduced the Clean Energy Future Plan, which would take the climate and clean energy provisions from her climate plan and make them into law.
This bold legislative package includes:
- 100 percent clean electricity standard by 2035
- Investments to expand solar and wind energy and advance building electrification and efficiency
- Reforms to the Public Service Commission’s authority to ensure climate and affordability considerations are incorporated into its work
This move towards clean energy is not only necessary but wildly popular. We polled Michiganders and found they overwhelmingly support building a cleaner, more resilient, and reliable energy system by transitioning to a fully clean energy grid.
When states invest in ambitious climate policy, we all win. Hitting these goals means creating jobs, cutting pollution, and advancing environmental justice. States like Michigan have a generational opportunity to both implement and build on the national victories the climate movement has secured over the past year—and the momentum is on our side. We're proud to be on the ground in Detroit and in D.C. helping to make that opportunity a reality.
Onward,
