Legislative Update
Omnibus season has started at the state capitol. This week we had our first omnibus bill on the house floor to signal the start of what will be an expensive few weeks at the State Capitol. The first bill up was the Omnibus Higher Education bill. While parts of the bill such as the tuition freeze are amiable the overall 18.5% budget increase and reckless spending make it impossible for me to support it in its current form. Unchecked spending is seemingly becoming a theme this session as a number of proposals include tax increases to fund new expenditures, even with a 17.5 Billion dollar surplus.
As more omnibus bills head to the floor next week we will continue to see increased? spending that will create significant deficits in the following biennia when we are not likely to have a huge surplus to fund these spending increases. This is unbelievable that as Minnesotans are facing increases in the cost of food and utilities, we would enact policies that add even more costs to their budgets through tax increases.
On the floor we heard House File 3 which Deputy Leader Torkelson dubbed the ?Protect Democrat Victories Act?. This is the first elections bill to EVER have passed the House floor without broad bipartisan support. This institution has a history of only passing elections changes when all sides agree; that tradition has just been thrown out.
Included in the bill:
* *Permanent Absentee Voters List* would mail a ballot to each of these voters every election without them even having requested or confirmed their current address.
* *Automatic Voter Registration* to add everyone who applies for a drivers license to the voter roles with little reassurance that these lists will be checked for eligibility.
* *Expanded ?Express Advocacy? Definitions* to blur what have historically been bright lines between what kinds of advocacy are allowed.
What are your thoughts on partisan election laws and how we can make voting a secure and trusted system for all Minnesotans?
