The Clock Is Ticking On Debt Ceiling Negotiations

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

April 7, 2023

The media is captivated by the indictment against former President Trump, as the story incites fury among Republicans and glee among Democrats. Meanwhile, the economy remains volatile, and the clock is ticking on the nation's debt limit. In his March 28 letter to Speaker McCarthy, President Biden restated his refusal to negotiate: "As I have repeatedly said, that conversation must be separate from prompt action on the Congress' basic obligation to pay the Nation's bills and avoid economic catastrophe.".

From the latest survey from Winning the Issues (March 1-3), a majority of voters want the President and Congressional leaders to negotiate a reasonable solution to the debt limit (51%). One in four (23%) prefers the approach of the President waiting to negotiate after Congressional leaders put forward their plan, and the approach of the President refusing to negotiate with Congress and insisting on a clean debt limit increase without conditions had the least support of the three paths (14%).
