Dear Neighbors,

Last week the House took a few days to be with family and friends, to catch our breath, and for some of us, to observe Passover, Easter, or Ramadan. I hope you all have been enjoying the feeling of hope and renewal as we move into the spring season.?

Over the last few weeks, we?ve been assembling our budget bills, and this week we began the process of passing budget bills off the floor. I?m happy to report that several of my bills have been included in these pieces of legislation as we work hard to craft a state budget that will make transformational investments in the future of Minnesota.?

Here?s an update from the Capitol.

Passing our First Budget Bills??

One of the things I love most about living in Minnesota is our thriving arts scene and our access to the outdoors. These state assets are supported by the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment [ [link removed] ]. This amendment, passed by voters in 2008, ensures that our state can be a great place to live, work, and play through collective investment.?

On Wednesday, House DFLers passed our first budget bill? legislation investing over $820 million to continue the important work of restoring, enhancing, and protecting Minnesota?s most treasured spaces and places and increasing access for all.

With investments in our outdoor heritage, clean water, parks and trails, and arts and cultural heritage, the 2023 Legacy Budget Bill [ [link removed] ] will make our state a better place to live for current and future generations, including by expanding free parks days and arts and cultural education programs. DFLers are expanding opportunities so all communities can access Legacy funding. If you are part of an organization in our district that would like to learn more about how to access these funds, please reach out.?

AAPI Day on the Hill

On Tuesday the House celebrated AAPI Day on the Hill. Our Asian American and Pacific Islander community is an integral part of Minnesota, and I am proud to be an AAPI representative for our communities at the Capitol. Minnesota has elected the second largest number of AAPI legislators in the United States. Our AAPI community is the fastest growing demographic in Minnesota, and it is important that we are seen and heard here in the legislature. This session we?re pushing for the priorities that come directly from our community and will make our state a more welcoming and inclusive place to live. These proposals include:

* Anti-Hate Crime Bill [ [link removed] ]?
* English learner programming funding increase [ [link removed] ]?
* Ethnic Studies for all Bill? [ [link removed] ]
* Culturally Specific Non-Profit Capacity Building Grants? [ [link removed] ]

Consent Decree Agreement

Following months of negotiations, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and the City of Minneapolis agreed to a consent decree that addresses our city police department?s history of race-based policing and charts a course to improve public safety. The consent decree has the potential to bring needed transparency, accountability and change to our police department. Our city is safer when those sworn to protect it do so in a system that is free of racism, misogyny, and disrespect. The final agreement terms can be found here [ [link removed] ], and the community engagement that informed the consent decree can be found here [ [link removed] ].?

Reminder: You?re Invited to a Coffee and Conversation!

As we progress through the final months of session, I want to invite you to a Coffee and Conversation. Tomorrow, April 14th. From 8 to 10am, I will be at Northern CoffeeWorks in Minneapolis with School Board Member Lori Norvell. We hope to see you there!
