John, we’re so excited to announce our first endorsement of the year!

Real Justice PAC could not be any prouder to endorse Matt Dugan for District Attorney of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania.

Matt Dugan began his career as a trial attorney, worked his way up to Deputy of Pre-Trial Division, and ultimately became the Chief Deputy Director of the Public Defender’s office. 

He has devoted his career to ensuring the most marginalized members of our community have access to fair and just outcomes in the courtroom. In Allegheny County, many people get caught up in the system because of many issues that we’ve failed to address, such as substance abuse disorders, untreated or undiagnosed mental health issues, and instability due to poverty. 

And we’re also failing many of the victims by not convicting the aggressors who commit serious crimes. 

That’s why we are endorsing Matt Dugan for District Attorney of Allegheny County (including Pittsburgh!). We know that he will show compassion, commitment, and integrity on a daily basis and work to root out the significant racial disparities in our criminal justice system.

The opponent in this race, Stephen Zappala, has been in office since 1998, and he has a disastrous track record. There have been calls for an investigation into Zappala not hiring Black prosecutors, and his approach to plea deals has been called “systematically racist.” In fact, a white motorist was given such a light sentence for fighting with police that the judge objected and said it was “a ridiculous plea that only goes to white boys.”

Zappala also jailed a woman for having a miscarriage and her lawyer said that it was “the most abusive prosecution I’ve ever witnessed.”

Enough is enough and with your help, we can finally defeat Zappala and elect a champion for justice in Pittsburgh and all of Allegheny County.

John, we have seen the good that Real Justice-backed DAs have done across this country. From the exemplary work of DA Larry Krasner in Philadelphia to pursue justice and free wrongfully convicted people to the most recent fair judgment and prosecution by DA Steven Mulroy of the Memphis police officers who murdered Tyre Nichols. 

Now is our chance to elect another progressive leader in Pennsylvania who will hold cops accountable, prosecute people fairly, and work to transform this unjust justice system.
