Overcoming Dental Anxiety
Studies show 1519 percent of people have dental anxiety—feelings that can lead to delay or avoidance in vital dental care.

In Health Affairs’ newest Leading To Health feature, author Charlotte Huff highlights researchers in Philadelphia who are testing a cognitive behavioral intervention to address dental care anxiety in patients.

Dentist Marisol Tellez Merchan and psychologist Eugene Dunne, who both teach at Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, are “testing a computer-based intervention that incorporates several cognitive behavioral techniques, including exposure therapy, to treat patients’ dental anxiety.”

The aim of the study is to inform how dental assistants can deliver interventions to patients in the office before their appointment, or—eventually--even before patients arrive.

While the in-office approach would miss patients who never show up in the first place, teledentistry, which has become more common during the pandemic, can support patients suffering at home.
