Jack, when news broke that a conservative billionaire had been vacationing with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and picking up the bill, pretty much every news media outlet in the country covered the story in depth, from multiple angles.
That is except for the conservative online magazine, the Dispatch. That's because Thomas' globetrotting billionaire friend also happens to be an investor in the Dispatch as well as "a friend of the founders."
This is exactly why Daily Kos doesn't have billionaire investors or backers. We don't want to be beholden to a person that could force us to pull our punches when it comes to what we post.
Instead we have tens of thousands of readers and activists that donate an average of $6.34. We prefer it this way because it makes us accountable to you—not to some billionaire with their own agenda. We know that in order to keep operating, we have to fight and deliver for what you believe in.
In fact, donations from the Daily Kos community account for more than half of our total revenue. Unfortunately, our two other sources of income, advertising and list growth, are lagging behind our projections. We have already had to make deep financial cuts, but it's still not enough. This means that we have to rely on our readers and activists even more to help us make ends meet.
We don't want to have to rely on some mega-donor to cover our expenses. Jack, can you support grassroots-funded, independent news by making a $5 donation to Daily Kos?
