We’re moving at light-year speed toward dire climate repercussions
John,
New findings from the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales shows that the runoff from glaciers will create a rapid slowdown of our major global deep ocean current as soon as 2050 — and if we don’t work to curb our greenhouse gas emissions now, our world’s climate could be wrecked beyond repair for centuries.
Here’s a bit of background: Our deep water currents have a gargantuan impact on our climate. They regulate the ocean’s food chain from bottom to top, dictate our weather patterns, and mitigate sea level rise by controlling the water’s surface temperatures.
They’re the heartbeat that ensures business both on land and on sea runs without a hitch — basically, they’re our built-in climate control.
But because rising greenhouse gas emissions have caused such rapid ice melt in Antarctica — and an unprecedented rise in the ocean’s surface temperatures — these currents have slowed dramatically.
Researchers speculate that changing the speeds of deep water currents used to take thousands of years — and now, they’re estimating that in less than three decades, these currents will slow by 40 percent.
John, we’re moving at light-year speed toward dire climate repercussions, and the only way we can reverse these trends before it’s too late is by cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Luckily, our SEEC Members are on the case. They’re playing offense and defense in Congress working to protect our existing clean energy regulations and enact new standards to set our climate back on the right path — all while fighting against an anti-climate House Republican majority.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
The Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition Political Action Committee (SEEC PAC) is an organization that supports members in the U.S. House of Representatives and candidates who fight for clean energy, climate change solutions, environmental justice, and protection of our nation’s clean air, water, wildlife, and public lands.
