Team —
Recently, Senator Ed Markey and I introduced the International Human Rights Defense Act — legislation to strengthen America’s role in protecting and promoting LGBTQ+ rights globally.
As the first LGBTQ+ immigrant in Congress, this bill is personal.
Uganda just passed one of the world’s most homophobic laws which would imprison those convicted of identifying as LGBTQ+ and even sentence some to death. But it doesn't stop there. 67 countries have national laws that criminalize same-sex relationships, and many more are proposing new legislation.
This is my first bill as a Congressman for a reason. This work matters to me, it matters to our country, and it matters to LGBTQ+ people around the world, who deserve to be protected regardless of nationality. As a proud, gay immigrant — the first openly gay immigrant ever in Congress — this is incredibly personal for me. And I’m honored to fight for our community in Congress.
So it’s time we stand up for LGBTQ+ rights not just at home — but abroad because LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. And that’s why I proposed the International Human Rights Defense Act.
If you agree and would like to continue to support my work in Congress, can you please contribute $3 so I can continue fighting for the LGBTQ+ community? I need to have the resources to continue this movement. [[link removed]]
