Team,
Monday night at midnight marked the end of the 2023 General Assembly and my first as Comptroller! Our team worked with legislators on hundreds of bills concerning tax policy and we brought several priority measures as well.
In Partnership with the General Assembly, we were able to fulfill several campaign commitments through the passage of six bills. This legislation will help us create a more effective and efficient office and includes measures to:
- Create the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate to provide additional resources to the public with complex tax cases while also acting as a voice to identify systemic issues impacting the public's ability to effectively navigate our tax system.
- Begin the process to replace our state's legacy accounting system - a much needed initiative that will provide better service for Marylanders once complete.
- Close loopholes utilized by out of state bad actors who were taking advantage of Maryland taxpayers to receive undue payments.
Despite not taking office until after the Session had already started, we were able to accomplish a great amount this session and I know there is more we can do over the next few years. I'll share even more details about session in updates to come!
I cannot do this work without friends like you and your support now allows us to continue to spread the word through emails like this and continue our outreach across the state.
The end of session also marks the end of the fundraising freeze. Can you contribute today to kick off our post session fundraising push? We need to make sure we are able to spread the word and keep our momentum going.
