John: Right now, Philadelphia is suffering from interlocking crises — in community violence, housing, public services, and climate change. We need a skilled and experienced leader, and a visionary and transformational one.
Helen Gym is that leader, and I ask that you join me in supporting her for Mayor of Philadelphia.
I’ll share why I believe Helen will build a safer, more vibrant Philadelphia in a moment, but I have a request before I do: Please click here to pitch in $20.23, or whatever you can spare, to Helen’s campaign for Philadelphia.
I first came to know of Helen through her organizing to support public education. During a time of deep crisis for the School District of Philadelphia, she was widely known among organizers, teachers, parents, and school staff as the most impassioned and effective parent-organizer in the city.
Helen poured that same energy and intelligence into her campaign for City Council. I remember casting my vote for her with enormous expectations. In office, she more than fulfilled them.
Helen’s Fair Workweek bill brought a fundamental change to service workers’ lives. Her work on eviction diversion and rental assistance brought together low-wage workers, businesses, and every level of government — state, local, federal, and courts — to achieve lasting change that kept people housed. Her work on issues like immigration and housing uplifts those most often left out of political life.
The most salient quality Helen brought to office was not an ideology but a skill: She was an organizer. She could build broad coalitions inside and outside City Hall to pass ambitious legislation that no one thought possible.
It is because she has done big things in the past — bigger than any Councilmember of her generation — that I know she will do big things as Mayor, but first she needs our support to win this race.
If you can, please make a donation of any amount to help elect my friend Helen Gym as our next mayor:
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your contribution will go through immediately:
Helen recognizes that the path to fighting our two worst crises — community violence and climate change — runs through making our key institutions safe and healthy: housing, libraries and recreation centers, and, above all, schools.
We won't find solutions to all these issues in the next four or eight years, but I cannot imagine a person better suited than Helen to set us on the path to get there. She is creative, intelligent, and fearless. She has been putting in the work to improve Philadelphians’ lives for 30 years, and as Mayor, she’ll deliver the change we need.
So John, please join me in voting for Helen on (or before) May 16th, and if you’re able, please volunteer or chip in today to help her bring real change to our city.
Thank you,
Senator Nikil Saval
PA Senate, District 1
