With the nation reeling from the devastating school shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN, another horrendous shooting with an AR-15 occurred inside a Luiseville bank this April 10.
In the shooting, 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, an employee of Old National Bank, used an AR-15 to kill five people and injure at least eight others, including two responding police officers, before being killed in a shootout with the police.
The AR-15--designed for military use to inflict massive harm quickly--has become a disturbing feature in mass shootings. The Louisville attack marks the seventh incident in the past 11 months involving assault rifles.

The AR-15 has replaced semiautomatic pistols as the preferred weapon for mass shooters, leading to more death and devastation. This trend is partly due to mass shooters emulating previous attackers in their planning and preparation and the gun industry's aggressive marketing tactics.
The gun industry estimates that at least 20 million AR-15s are in circulation throughout the country, according to a recent series on the firearm from the Washington Post. Over the past decade, nearly 14 million of those rifles were manufactured by US gun companies, generating sales revenues of roughly $11 billion.
The ban on assault weapons is a logical step towards reducing gun violence and one widely supported nationwide. Polls have shown that most Americans, including responsible gun owners, support this common-sense measure.
"Thoughts and prayers" are not enough. Sign the petition to Congress: Pass an assault weapons ban NOW!
