Commissioner's Column

Recently, my colleagues and I met with the team at the Productivity Commission working on the review of philanthropy. It was a great discussion, diving quickly into what the ACNC has seen from its first decade and what support (for example, with our data) we can give to this important review. Growing funding for charities is core to sustainability, so within the ACNC’s objects to care about!

[[link removed]] Answering your questions

A few of the most common questions we have been hearing from charities recently...

Q. I'm new on the board of my charity, and I don't know when our Annual Information Statement is due. How can I find out?

A. Each charity has its own due date based on the reporting year it has recorded with us. By default, charities are deemed to operate on a standard financial year (1 July to 30 June) but a charity can apply to have a different reporting year.

The due date for the Annual Information Statement for each charity is listed on its Charity Register page.

Look up your charity on the Charity Register [[link removed]] to see the due date for its Annual Information Statement.

Q. My charity wants to advocate regarding the upcoming referendum regarding an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Can we? And what do we need to know?

A. Charities can, and often do, engage in advocacy activities and some charities might want to advocate for a particular outcome on the referendum. You will need to ensure that your charity's constitution allows for it to advocate and ensure that any advocacy activities are in pursuit of its charitable purpose.

We recently released information for charities regarding advocacy and the planned referendum.
