John, today California voters are hearing about the new Republican candidate in this Senate race, Eric Early — many for the first time. Not me, though. Or the hundreds of thousands of Southern Californians I currently represent.
While folks across the state will be hearing from Eric Early much more often — and soon — I’ve faced him before. He’s the MAGA Republican who ran against me for Congress in 2020, and now he’s running again to defeat me.

Early raised well over $4 million to defeat me the last time. He called the impeachment proceedings that I helped lead against Trump a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.” He went on TV and radio with ads attacking my character. He sent vicious attack mailers with false smears. And he spread lies and conspiracy theories about me across our district, on Fox, OAN and on Twitter.
The Republican money machine is desperate for a candidate like this, who has built his entire reputation on lies, attacks, and political smear campaigns...against me. After all, Trump, Kevin McCarthy, and virtually the entire Republican Party have made me their national boogeyman — and their attacks will only grow more vicious with an extreme candidate like Eric Early in this race. It’s been their playbook for years now.
And with a Republican Speaker from the Golden State, Republicans have new resources to pour into California. McCarthy raised over $12 million in one night this year from corporate PACs and lobbyists, and told a reporter who asked about the California Senate race, “I think a Republican could win.”
Eric Early’s entire political career has been about parroting Trump’s lies and attacks and trying to destroy my character. Now he’s taking those efforts statewide, and he will have the entire Republican political establishment cheering him on and supporting him financially.
