Glenn Greenwald is being charged with cybercrime for investigative journalism

John,

The Brazillian government has made the shocking decision to charge Glenn Greenwald with cybercrime for doing his job as a journalist.[1]

This is terrible news for the future of the global free press. Greenwald is a journalist, and if this case proceeds, it could have a chilling effect on investigative journalism and set a dangerous precedent going forward.

Sign the petition: Drop the charges against journalist Glenn Greenwald

More than 40 press freedom and civil liberties groups have signed a letter denouncing the charging of Greenwald,[2] that reads in part:

“...by charging Greenwald with cybercrime, the government has essentially criminalized engaging in legitimate journalistic practices, which threatens to have a chilling effect on journalists and sources alike."

Investigative journalism is a vital resource. From Watergate to The Iraq War Logs, to the NSA leaks, journalism remains an absolutely critical element to a free and open society. If there is enough pressure from the public, the Brazilian government will have to act, but we need to mobilize support now. Please, join us in our defense of journalists everywhere, in rejecting this horrifying decision by the Brazilian government.
