Growing up, my family relied on the social safety net that Republicans across the country are trying to eliminate.
You may already know my story. My father lost his job in his 50s, and we survived with the help of food stamps and the generosity of others, but there were still months when the food stamps ran out early and we didn’t have enough to eat. This was a tough time for our family, but we managed to survive.
Then, when I was 16, I became the only member of my immediate family with a job. By selling roses on the side of the road for 25 cents each and taking on other odd jobs, I helped pull my family out of poverty — and developed a deep-seated appreciation both for the social safety net that helped keep my family afloat and for just how hard so many Americans have to work to survive, pay their rent, and put food on the table.
Now, the very social safety net that kept my family above water is at risk because extremists in the House GOP are willing to take our nation to the brink of economic collapse to force a standoff over drastic cuts.
