Last week, voters in Wisconsin and Chicago elected strong, progressive candidates in hugely influential elections – and achieved victories for abortion rights, police reform, and fair elections!

In Wisconsin, Janet Protasiewicz defeated her far-right, anti-choice opponent for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, flipping the court to a 4-3 liberal majority! The Court is expected to rule on lawsuits involving the state’s 1849 abortion ban, which Wisconsin Republicans are trying to keep in place, and Republican-drawn gerrymandered maps – and Protasiewicz’s victory will have massive implications for these decisions and more. Thank you, Wisconsin voters!

In Chicago, voters came together to elect progressive Brandon Johnson as their next mayor, defeating his conservative opponent. Johnson, a former teacher, was propelled to victory by unions like the Chicago Teachers’ Union and Service Employees International Union. As Mayor, Johnson plans to reform Chicago’s public safety strategy by focusing on community-based interventions and mental health care, as well as investing in education, affordable housing, and climate disaster mitigation. Thank you, Chicago voters!

Looking forward, there are still key elections happening in 2023! This November, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi will hold statewide elections to determine their Governor, Secretary of State, and more. Virginia will hold elections for its State Assembly, just two years after Republicans flipped control of the House of Delegates. And local elections are still upcoming in cities across the nation to decide their Mayor and City Councilmembers.
