Hey folks,
Like many of you, last week’s events in Tennessee left me deeply disturbed — and they underscored that the fight for our values and our democracy must continue.
Before I explain more, will you split a donation of any amount between us and the Tennessee Democratic Party to support our fight for gun safety solutions?
Last week, Tennessee’s Republican-led House expelled two young Black Democratic State Representatives — Justin Pearson and Justin Jones — after they led a peaceful protest in the state capitol alongside hundreds of young Tennesseans calling for gun safety reforms following the horrific mass shooting at a Christian school in Nashville.
The move drew widespread condemnation — but today, I’m inspired by the strength and resilience of the movement created in its aftermath.
Just four days after these undemocratic expulsions, the Nashville Metropolitan Council unanimously voted to reappoint Justin Jones to the legislature. After the Nashville Council’s vote, Reps. Pearson and Jones gathered with supporters on the steps of the state capitol and reaffirmed their values — especially when it comes to ending our gun violence epidemic. And Rep. Pearson said this: “This is what democracy looks like.”
We can’t agree more, folks. When we stand together and fight for our shared values, we can win. That’s the beauty of our democracy, and why it’s so important to act right now.
Please split a donation of any amount between our work and the Tennessee Democratic Party to ensure that the fight for democracy, decency, and common-sense gun safety reforms can continue.
