Friend,
For the first time in three decades, we’re seeing the largest sustained regression in childhood vaccinations.
This backslide is the result of compounding crises; factors like supply chain disruptions, conflict, displacement and widespread vaccine misinformation all play a role in the decreasing numbers of vaccinations and the increasing number of preventable deaths. Children in these conflict-affected areas miss out on basic immunizations because of the breakdown of vital health services. Conflict threatens the lives of health workers and destroys medical facilities, supplies and equipment.
When crises compound in countries like Afghanistan, Syria and South Sudan where resources and aid are already limited, the consequences are measured in lives. But UNICEF is working to make up lost ground in hard-to-reach areas:
- Routine vaccination campaigns are working to get children back on track in crisis zones like Yemen, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa.
- Since 1988, the number of children affected by polio has reduced by over 99 percent and has gone from the leading cause of paralysis among children worldwide to the brink of eradication.
- UNICEF procures more than $100 million worth of cold chain equipment annually, helping to deliver vaccines to the communities that need them most.
The hope of better futures for children in conflict-afflicted areas requires long-term investment. That’s why UNICEF counts on supporters who make monthly contributions: a reliable stream of funding keeps programs like these running.
