Dear Jack,

The third “Our Land, Our Nature” Conference
[[link removed]] to Decolonize Conservation is taking place on April 14th in New York City, and
we’d love for you to join. It’s also being streamed online.

This conference seeks to change the conversation around mainstream conservation by bringing together Indigenous peoples
[[link removed]] from around the world, along with other human rights experts, to elevate the
voices of those who have seen their lands stolen and their livelihoods
devastated by the increasing militarization of conservation.

Indigenous and local people’s voices are all-too-often unheard or ignored, and
this conference is a rare opportunity to change thinking around conservation,
and to advocate for an alternative approach based on Indigenous rights.

You can register for the conference online [[link removed]] , or join in person [[link removed]] . We hope to see you there!

We’ll also be holding a protest [[link removed]] on April 15th outside the Bronx Zoo, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation
Society (WCS). WCS is one of the world’s oldest conservation organizations and
has a long history of complicity in human rights abuses in the name of
conservation. Learn more about the protest and
[[link removed]] register here
[[link removed]] .

You may also be interested in the virtual symposium Unfence the Future: Taking
Down Fortress Conservation and its Enduring Legacy, happening today and
tomorrow: bit.ly/UnfenceTheFuture
[[link removed]] . This conference brings together community leaders, activists, scientists, and
scholars working to dismantle the enduring legacies of fortress conservation in
institutions of U.S. law, historic preservation, and conservation.

And lastly, I wanted to let you know that a powerful and unique collection of voices
[[link removed]] from the first, ground-breaking “Our Land, Our Nature" conference is being
published now. Titled “Decolonize Conservation: Global Voices for Indigenous
Self-determination, Land, and a World In Common”, it exposes the deadly reality
of colonial and racist conservation for Indigenous peoples around the world,
while suggesting alternatives to tackle the climate crisis.

With best wishes,

Shayann Hendricks
