The Shellfish Beds Implementation Strategy update is open for comment.
The Shellfish Beds Implementation Strategy outlines a recovery plan to accelerate progress towards restoring and protecting harvestable shellfish beds by preventing and reducing pathogen pollution in Puget Sound. The update builds upon the 2016 version. The Shellfish Beds Implementation Strategy guides the work and investments of the Shellfish Strategic Initiative Lead.
The comment period is open from April 11 to May 26, 2023.

Funding Opportunity- Now Open
The Shellfish Strategic Initiative Lead is excited to announce a new funding opportunity for programs, activities, and lines of work that advance Puget Sound recovery and protection.
Request for Proposals (RFP) to integrate shellfish bed classification priorities in municipal or domestic (sewage) wastewater facility function, planning and/or upgrades.
- Solicitation will be open for 7 weeks, applications are due May 31, 2023, by 11:59pm.
- $1 million of FFY2021 and 2022 EPA Puget Sound Geographic funds to award.
- Investment Priorities include enabling wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to prepare for modifications that will lead to shellfish classification upgrades around outfalls, implement small-scale upgrades, consider future capacity needs, and/or to reduce frequency of emergency closures that impact shellfish bed harvest.
Eligible applicants
This RFP is targeted towards municipal or domestic (sewage) wastewater treatment plant owners and operators - state, city, utility district, nonprofit, and private owners who are in legal authority of a wastewater treatment plant can be eligible for this funding opportunity. Proposed work needs to meet all applicable federal, state and local rules, regulations, and permitting requirements. Partnerships which include those who own and/or operate a wastewater treatment plant can be eligible as well.
