World Bank cafeteria workers picket today
Workers at the Compass-operated cafeteria at the World Bank will picket this afternoon at 4p (see Calendar). The workers, members of UNITE HERE 23, are in negotiations for new union contracts that keep up with the cost of living. Last week Local 23 released the results of a survey that detailed the ways workers struggle to afford necessities like food and housing. “Compass cafeteria workers feed some of the most prestigious and influential institutions in our nation’s Capital,” said UNITE HERE President D. Taylor, “yet they’re struggling to pay their bills. Compass is the largest food service contractor in the US. Food service workers have been really whacked by inflation, but workers are in a position of power right now to advocate for change. We plan to fight hard to turn these jobs, and all hospitality jobs, into jobs you can live on in DC.” Read more here.

Workers at Solid State Books unionize
The staff of Solid State Books have unionized with UFCW Local 400, the union announced yesterday. The owners of the store -- located at 600 H Street NE -- have signed an agreement to voluntarily recognize the union, making Solid State Books the second bookstore in the District of Columbia to unionize after booksellers and baristas at Politics and Prose organized and ratified a contract last year. The workers organizing committee thanked “our customers, community allies and fellow union members for your outpouring of support. We look forward to negotiating our first contract collectively and making Solid State the best workplace it can be. Solidarity forever!”

A group of "puddlers" -- craftsmen who manipulated pig iron to create steel -- met in a Pitsburgh bar and formed The Iron City Forge of the Sons of Vulcan. It was the strongest union in the U.S. in the 1870s, later merging with two other unions to form what was to be the forerunner of the United Steel Workers - 1858
