Content warning: This email discusses gun violence.
John,
Another community has been torn apart by gun violence. This time in Louisville, Kentucky. Two weeks before, at an elementary school in Tennessee.
The trauma of these events reverberates throughout our nation. Watching events unfold on social media and on the news, it affects us all. The pain of knowing that we are the only country in the world that has accepted gun violence as the status quo.
If you are having a hard time dealing with the weight of these current events, please seek out help. Our friends at March for Our Lives have put together a list of resources.
Mere thoughts and prayers are not enough and will never suffice. This is a uniquely American epidemic that must be addressed — and it must be addressed now.
Meanwhile, instead of legislating to save lives and ban assault weapons, Republicans are obsessed with banning the bodily autonomy of women and pregnant people. And in Tennessee, in the wake of a school shooting, state Republicans prioritized propriety and ousted two Black lawmakers who protested gun violence on the House floor.
John, regardless of what NRA bank-rolled Republicans tell us, we do not have to accept gun violence in our nation. I will not stop calling out my colleagues and leaders across the nation who prioritize the second amendment above our children. I will continue fighting to advance common-sense gun control legislation.
My thoughts are with the affected families and communities.
Thank you,
Pramila
