CTV News Update New Informed Consent Law in Michigan: Choosing life is an option that women considering abortion should be presented with. What happens when a woman starts the dangerous process of a pill-induced abortion and suddenly changes her mind? Incredibly, the proper administration of natural hormones can often reverse the effects of the medication, lead to a healthy pregnancy, and save the baby's life. The tragic news? Many clinics where abortion pills are available never inform the mothers that they have the option of changing her mind and saving their baby. On the anniversary of Roe V. Wade last week, Representative Beth Griffin introduced an important bill to remedy this problem. CTV supports HB 5374 , which would require that women who are given abortion pills also be given information on the protocol for reversing the pill and continuing the pregnancy. Roughly 1 in 3 of all abortion procedures in Michigan currently depend on pills, the effects of which can often be reversed if the mother changes her mind within a certain window of time. Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing said, “Offering information to women about their options should be something abortion businesses have no issue with, as they claim to support all women’s choices. The abortion pill reversal protocol is another choice for women who experience regret after taking the first abortion pill.” Learn more about the proposed legislation here. SCOTUS to rule on Religious Liberty in Education and Anti-Catholic Laws Last week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, a case where parents are challenging the state's decision to exclude religious schools from a scholarship program. The case has the potential to overturn a host of anti-Catholic laws that have been on the books in many states since the 1800's and increase access to religious educational institutions for children across the nation. This decision may affect similar laws in states throughout the country, including a similar provision in Michigan's 1963 Constitution, known as the Blaine Amendment. Continuing Executive efforts to extend equal treatment to religious organizations, the DOJ argued that while the Founding Fathers were concerned about preventing compelled funding of religion, they never intended for religious organizations to be denied generally available benefits simply because they are religious. Successful Protest of Oakland County’s Half Million-dollar Donation to Planned Parenthood Thank you to everyone who came out last week to stand for life at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners meeting. Despite the freezing cold, a peaceful, effective protest was held before the Commission meeting in response the County's donation of a half-million dollars to Planned Parenthood. Many remained to speak boldly for the unborn during public comment. Watch the meeting and public comment here. For Oakland County voters, this is a call to action. The new liberal majority on the Commission is using taxpayer dollars to push their agenda. While a protest is a great way to raise awareness of the issue, we must remember that the best long-term recourse is to vote them out of office in the next election.
