When I first ran for Durham County Commissioner, I never intended to make history. I never even imagined I’d run for public office.
But when I was 21 years old, a hate crime left me personally shattered. Three of my best friends, Deah, Yusor, and Razan, were brutally murdered for being Muslim, a faith that I share.
They had dedicated their lives to serving communities at home and beyond. I was broken, but their parents, with incredible strength and love, asked us not to let their legacy die – to continue to remember the three of them and cherish them in our work.
That love is what has inspired me to take action, and I hope it inspires you as well to step up for love in the face of hate.
