GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin just reinstated a lifetime ban on voting for anyone with a prior felony conviction. This is a Jim Crow-era policy that had a greatly disproportionate impact on voters of color – in fact, up until 2016, one in five Black Virginians were permanently disenfranchised.

A few years ago, the New York Times called Virginia “a voting rights bastion” under Democratic leadership. But under Republican leadership, Virginia is now home to one of the harshest voter disenfranchisement regimes in the country.

This isn’t just about one state, John. Republicans are working to roll back progress on fair maps and voting rights in states like North Carolina, and they’re working to impose new voting restrictions at the national level. Simply put, now is not the time to let our guard down.

When Attorney General Eric Holder warned us that “Now is not the time to take our democracy for granted,” this is what he was talking about.
