Have you heard of central Sahel?
It’s a region consisting of 3 countries in West and Central Africa — Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. It rarely makes the front page or leads the news cycle. But it’s one of the toughest places in the world for children to grow up.
Armed conflict in the Sahel has disrupted lives, decimated resources and even targeted children. With additional devastating climate effects like food insecurity and malnutrition, this compounding crisis is made even more complex and challenging. While just 12 percent of the world’s children live in this region, that 12 percent suffer a disproportionate burden of child deprivation. For example, the Sahel is home to a third of the world's children who die before they reach age 5, and a third of the world’s children who are out of school. Children are against the odds and long-term aid is vital.
Your monthly support will go the distance to ensure that children, like those in the Sahel and other regions where millions are in need amid crisis, receive every ounce of support UNICEF can provide to protect them today and in the future. Start giving monthly now >> |
Major emergencies like the one unfolding in central Sahel remain chronically and critically underfunded.
Every year, UNICEF issues an appeal for funding needs to provide water and sanitation, nutrition, education and child protection in this region, and every year they only receive 30 percent of what is needed.
Despite security threats, complex logistics and other challenges in places like the Sahel, UNICEF delivers relief to children. And we need your help to ensure this work continues around the world, wherever help is needed.
