Implications Of MA Growth
Do practice changes associated with growing enrollment in Medicare Advantage (MA) spill over to enrollees in traditional Medicare?

This month in Health Affairs, Fangli Geng and coauthors examine MA penetration rates across health care markets. They determine that as Medicare Advantage expands, postacute care use in both it and traditional Medicare declines, without a corresponding increase in hospital readmissions.

This negative association is stronger in markets with a higher rate of traditional Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in accountable care organizations, the authors report, "suggesting that the combination of these two separate programs results in greater efficiency in postacute care delivery."

These findings indicate policy makers should look at the implications of MA expansion for both MA spending and traditional Medicare. For the full discussion of the policy implications of their research, read Geng and coauthors’ entire paper online today.
