Dear John,
Junk fees, junk fees! They’re here, there, and everywhere we don’t expect them.
Junk fees are extra hidden charges we don’t know about until they show up on the bill.
They’re a bait and switch, where the thing that gets switched is how much money comes out of our wallets. They’re a kind of false advertising, where the price advertised is not the actual price you pay. They’re a form of manipulation, making it impossible to comparison shop between similar items.
There must be something that can be done about this, right? Check out our new video and find out what we can do -- if we challenge our lawmakers.
Airline ticketing fees. Concert fees. Bank overdraft fees. Hotel resort fees. Fees just to cancel your internet or cable. Corporations have gone nuts with junk fees.
Companies often label these types of charges “convenience fees” or “service fees.” Probably because they “conveniently” “serve” to pad their bottom lines, costing Americans at least $29 billion dollars a year that they didn’t expect to pay.
No wonder Americans are fed up. One thing that brings our divided nation together is our collective hatred of junk fees.
But there’s good news. President Biden has recently urged Congress to adopt legislation preventing these outrageous fees, and his plans have bipartisan support amongst voters. It’s time for Congress to act by cracking down on junk fees so customers know the full price of what they are buying.
Watch and share our video with a friend. And support efforts that will stop corporations from robbing Americans with bogus fees.
Thanks for watching,
Robert Reich
