John,
If a resident in my district traveled just 10 minutes from their home across the border into Canada, they’d find that the average price for one vial of insulin is just $12. But in my home city of Detroit, it’s $98.70. This is due to Big Pharma’s extortion.
Since 1996, the price of insulin has gone up by over 1,000%. Insulin price-gouging over the past few decades has led to people skipping doses and dying. Last year, 1.3 million people with diabetes were forced to ration insulin because they couldn’t afford it. Meanwhile, the three major insulin manufacturers made $21 billion in profits last year.
So I’m co-sponsoring the Insulin for All Act, which would prohibit manufacturers from charging more than $20 for a vial of insulin.
I firmly believe that healthcare is a human right and families should not have to ration life-saving medication. I am outraged that our community and neighbors can't get essential treatment without facing a heavy financial burden on their family. Every person who needs insulin should be able to have access to it.
Please add your name to sign on as a grassroots cosponsor of the Insulin for All Act today.
I am committed to stopping Big Pharma from continuing to take advantage of people merely to increase their profits. Corporate greed has consumed the healthcare sector for far too long.
20% of families are weighed down by medical debt in this country, and it’s one of the major reasons people file for bankruptcy.
That’s why I recently re-introduced legislation to stop the collection of medical debt for two years and prohibit debt from medically necessary procedures from being included on a credit report. And I continue to push for Medicare for All, because we must take the profit motivation out of healthcare.
Please sign if you agree: It’s outrageous that Americans pay the highest prices for insulin in the world. It’s time for the Insulin for All Act.
Thank you. Together, we can end Big Pharma’s price-gouging.
In solidarity,
Rashida
