Clarence Thomas has written 751 Supreme Court opinions.
But one picture sums up Thomas’ legacy on the nation’s highest court better than any of the rulings or dissents he’s authored.
Despite the photorealism, that’s actually a painting, commissioned by billionaire dark money king Harlan Crow. It shows Clarence Thomas smoking a cigar while vacationing at a private resort (as one does) with other dark money kings, a Trump administration lawyer, and the founder of the hyper-partisan and ultraconservative Federalist Society, all bankrolled by the billionaire on the right in khaki shorts and sandals.
Clarence Thomas must resign as a Supreme Court justice.
John, Justice Thomas has brought shame and disgrace to himself and to the Supreme Court by secretly accepting — for over 20 years — expensive gifts, travel and accommodations from a dark money billionaire in return for decisions benefiting that billionaire’s business and political interests.
Every judge knows that it is wrong to accept luxury gifts from anyone, because it creates — at very least — an appearance of impropriety. But Justice Thomas didn’t care about appearances because he kept everything secret, and he failed to disclose the gifts and travel as required by law. He thought he could get away with it because Supreme Court justices refuse to apply a code of conduct to themselves.
As my team said in their email the other day, this goes way beyond a trip to Crow’s mountain resort. He’s wined and dined Justice Thomas at luxury resorts and on vacation cruises around the world. He's pampered Justice Thomas with travel on his private jet and super yacht. And Justice Thomas, for over 20 years, has done the bidding of his billionaire suitor.
Thank you,
