California is dreaming about a government takeover of health insurance once again.

Earlier this month, state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, introduced ([link removed]) SB 770. The bill would seek a federal waiver to allow the state to use federal funds earmarked for Medicare and Medicaid to create a state-run health insurance system that would cover all Californians — whether they like it or not.

How do you measure a year? Your desk calendar might suggest months or days. The musical “Rent” famously offered 525,600 minutes and a number of other more creative metrics.

Ask a progressive health policy expert, though, and they may give you the most shocking option of all. For years, progressives have attempted to build their policy proposals around “quality-adjusted life years,” or QALYs. This approach ostensibly assigns a dollar amount to a year of human life.

Despite the obvious failures of Obamacare and Medicaid, Democrats still can’t get enough of public health care.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) may have said that Medicare for All “ain’t going to happen” in the next two years because of our divided Congress. But his single-payer dream remains a guiding light for the next generation of progressives.
