Dear John,
Approximately 6.9 million women living in the U.S. lack adequate access to maternal health care, making our country the most dangerous developed nation for a woman to give birth. And for Black women, it is even more dangerous – they are 3-4x more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women.
Start Early believes that every birthing person has the right to a safe and supported pregnancy, birth, and postnatal experience. Research and the experiences of birthing people across the country – including those in our home visiting and doula programs – show that this time is critical in establishing the long-term well-being of both the mother and child. While we know these services help, programs alone won’t solve for systemic racism.
