Purchase From 1978 to today, who we serve and how we help is always evolving to better serve our clients and our community. Every service and shelter night Doorways provides is a testament to our founders' legacy and this community's lasting commitment to safe harbor, healing, and hope. In 1989, we purchased our second shelter to serve families who were homeless for a variety of reasons. That home later became the Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home after being torn down and rebuilt to accommodate more families. Recognizing the need for clients to have a safe and stable option beyond emergency shelter, we created our HomeStart Supportive Housing Program in 1996. Starting with just 5 families transitioning from our Family Home and Domestic Violence Safehouse, this program has grown and expanded to become an industry leader, today housing about 50 families per year. Stay tuned for more historical highlights in the next edition of This Week at Doorways. Can't wait 'til then? See the timeline in our 2022 annual report! This series is inspired by our partner PathForward's series marking their 30th anniversary this spring; the idea is used with their permission. In the News Local nonprofits and the Arlington County government have received $3 million in federal funding to address homelessness "Nearly $200,000 will go to two new programs from the organizations Doorways and PathForward, formerly A-SPAN. The rest — save for about $81,000 for the county — will support existing programs provided by Bridges to Independence, Doorways, New Hope Housing and PathForward. 'This HUD funding helps ensure survivors of intimate partner violence have access to housing and additional pathways out of shelter, so that they can find healing, harbor, and hope for a brighter future,' Doorways President and CEO Diana Ortiz told ARLnow in a statement."
