 April 3 Meet-and-Greet was GREAT!

We had a great turnout at our first in-person event of the year! The weather could not have been nicer for our rooftop gathering at the Hotel Hive in Foggy Bottom on April 3. Sister District Head of Organizing Susan Farrell addressed the event to talk about plans for the coming election season, especially here in Virginia. If you enjoyed the event, let us know – and tell a friend about Sister District!

Look for future events coming soon!

Candidate Reveals

Our first candidate will be announced next week! 🎊🎉

Phonebanking

We will start phonebanking at the end of May. Phonebanking will be on Wednesday nights, usually over Zoom. Why do we start in May? Early 📞 get results – and help recruit on-the-ground volunteers for our candidates! 🏃‍♀️🏃

Training is provided and you do not need any experience to join. Look for a Mobilize link coming soon.

Historic Firsts Series

Sister District has partnered with Teen Vogue on the Historic Firsts series. The first subject is Arizona State Rep. Lorena Austin, elected in 2022 as the first Chicanx gender-nonconforming state legislator in the country.

Who is Sister District DC/VA/MD?

We are volunteers who agree that elections for state legislatures are where the real change is made, and understand the impact small efforts and donations can make in these critical elections.

We are led by our steering committee, chaired by Sarah Fichter.

About Sarah

Sarah grew up in Berlin, Germany (yes, that one), but has been living in DC now for more years than she cares to admit. She shares her apartment with two older cats, lots and lots of books, and a growing movie collection. During working hours, she’s a technical writer and editor in the IT/health field. When she's not at her job, you can often find her browsing at Politics & Prose (see also: books), and she's been known to mix up a custom cocktail or two when she's feeling fancy.

Sarah joined our chapter around 2018, to help channel her anxiety and rage over politics into more effective action. As a long-time DC resident, she was especially frustrated after the 2016 election not to have a voice in Congress. She feels that working with Sister District gives her a concrete way to fight for positive change even from her super blue district, by working to protect and expand people's rights in purple and red states..

Before You Go...

Sister District’s mission is to imagine, build, and expand progressive power in state legislatures, and we know that organizing around elections is just one piece of the puzzle.

That’s why we’re amplifying the voices of local lawmakers, educating the public about the importance of state leaders and policies, and inspiring folks to deepen their civic engagement — especially locally and down-ballot.

There is power in storytelling, and the more people we bring into this fight, the more powerful our movement will become. We hope you will join us in our efforts!

We look forward to seeing you at the next event soon!
