Dear Friend--
Ballot initiatives allow us to tell legislators what we want. It's
how we express our power. Some lawmakers are changing the
rules to get their way - no matter what the majority of Ohioans
want.
Please fight to protect the will of Ohio voters with
a generous Earth Day gift today
Rep. Brian Stewart and Secretary of State Frank LaRose
are pushing House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR1), which would
require a 60% majority for any November issue to pass. This would make
it much harder for Ohioans to make their voices heard and enact
important changes through ballot initiatives.
The timing and urgency are no coincidence given how intent our
lawmakers are on stopping the Ohio Reproductive Freedom Amendment that
is likely to be on the November 2023 ballot.
But it gets even worse. These same lawmakers are pushing to bring back
the August special election, eliminated just a few short
months ago because of its $20 million taxpayer-funded price tag.
Should HJR1 pass in August, it would require a 60% majority
requirement for any proposed Constitutional Amendment on the November
ballot to pass. It's a blatant power grab that we cannot let
happen.
That’s why we are asking for your help. Your contribution will help us
continue to push back against this power grab
and protect the rights of Ohio
voters.
It is likely
that HJR1 will move through the legislature quickly. They have until May 10 to get HJR1 passed in
order for it to appear on the August special election ballot.
Please join with us and the 215 other Ohio groups that have
come together in opposition to HJR1. Stay tuned for opportunities to submit written
opposition testimony or watch legislative
hearings live. We will let you know when hearings are scheduled.
Thank you for your support,
