Hello John,
Last week, three Major Threats had hearings in Salem. We need your help now to stop bad bills from rolling back our progress and putting our health, communities, wildlife, and land use laws at risk.
That’s why I’m writing you today. We need your help to ensure that we’re ready to stop Major Threats now and through the rest of session. Will you make an urgent contribution today to help? [DONATE: [link removed]]
Every session we face threats to our health, communities, wildlife, and natural resources. Right now we are actively defending against several Major Threats:
HB 2631 proposes a seven-time fair market value multiplier for any livestock or working dogs killed by wolves. That means a living cow valued at $2000 would skyrocket in value to $14,000 if it is killed by a wolf. Amendments to this bill propose a five-time multiplier, which still fails to resolve the issues in the original bill.
HB 3086 would change how appointments to the Fish and Wildlife Commission are made, creating a Commission based on geography, not population. This model would result in the overrepresentation of some people while potentially erasing others. If we care about our land, wildlife, and how they are managed and enjoyed, we need a diversity of people and interests to be represented on the Commission watching over ODFW.
HB 2659 would repeal and delay implementation of the Climate Friendly & Equitable Communities (CFEC) program, established by Governor Brown’s executive order on climate. It would transform eight urban areas, making neighborhoods more pedestrian and bike friendly, improving air quality and livability for us all. A rollback of this program would allow continued climate pollution, prioritization of cars over people, and inequitable access to housing options.
HB 3382 would exempt port expansion projects from local and state land use laws for our deepwater ports in Astoria, Coos Bay, Newport, Portland, and St. Helens. In addition to eliminating public input on port expansion projects, this bill poses a serious threat to Oregon’s largest estuaries, and ecologically vital habitat areas where careful land use review is especially important..
These bills all share one thing in common. They pose major threats to some of the issues we care about most—protecting our democracy and land use laws, addressing climate change, and protecting vulnerable wildlife and their habitats. Your help now is critical to ensure that we have the resources we need to stop these bills from advancing.
Please make an urgent contribution today of whatever amount is right for you. Every dollar makes a difference. [DONATE: [link removed]]
We are over halfway through the legislative session and the coming weeks are a dangerous time when our priorities will be at risk of being used as trade bait during negotiations. We cannot let that happen.
Let’s keep the pressure up and make sure that we are prepared to defend against threats and continue making progress for Oregon’s environment.
Thank you for your support,
Julia DeGraw, OLCV Coalition Director
