Dear John,

Today, our hearts ache as news broke of a tragic mass shooting in downtown Louisville, Kentucky earlier today. At this moment, four people were killed, and eight others were wounded in the attack at the Old National Bank, just near Slugger Field baseball stadium. Shortly after, an additional and unrelated shooting occurred, which killed one and wounded one other.

Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and the entire Louisville community during this incredibly difficult time. Just last month, Kentucky lawmakers passed a bill that would make the state a so-called Second Amendment sanctuary, prohibiting local law enforcement from enforcing federal firearm bans.

We know that gun violence is an American problem. We do not have to live this way. The guns are putting us all at riskโ€“in movie theaters, schools, grocery stores, places of worship, clubs, and now banksโ€“and our elected officials can and must do something to stop it. Add your name to our petition now. [[link removed]]

We believe we can put ourselves out of a job and live in a nation free from gun violence โ€“ but in order to achieve this reality, Congress must act. Today, we're reminded of the urgent need to put an end to the epidemic of gun violence that continues to plague our nation. We must stand together and demand meaningful policy to prevent future tragedies.

We are no longer saying thoughts and prayers. We are saying policy and change.
