John,
While we saw incredible wins for Democrats across the midwest last week, a lot of disgraceful things happened in state legislatures. If you’ve been following the news and are already sick of these GOP schemes, please consider making a gift to Sister District so we can flip state legislatures across the country.
In case you missed it, here’s a taste of what happened last week:
-
Tennessee State Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled from the State House for supporting protestors calling for gun violence prevention legislation. Clearly the TN GOP were more concerned with punishing these two Black legislators than actually addressing the school shooting that inspired their protests.
- In Kansas, GOP legislators overrode Governor Laura Kelly’s veto and rammed through a horrifying anti-trans youth bill that could lead to potentially invasive examinations of student athletes to prove their gender. We know these attacks on trans and LGBTQ+ youth are not expected to end in Kansas.
- We fought HARD to narrowly prevent a GOP supermajority in North Carolina last year, but State Representative Tricia Cotham officially switched her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, providing the GOP a supermajority that could have potentially devastating implications for abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights, education, voting rights, and more.
During big news weeks like this, it can be easy to get discouraged — but we must use this anger, frustration, and disappointment to energize us for the urgent local elections ahead. We saw the power of grassroots supporters in Wisconsin last week, and we can’t let that energy be overpowered by hate.
Please consider making a gift of $5 or whatever you can afford today so we can elect Democrats in crucial elections in states across the country.
