Daily Docket — Monday, April 10
Here are some updates from the last few days.
The Nashville Metro Council voted to send recently expelled state Rep. Justin Jones (D) back to the Tennessee General Assembly. Last week, Tennessee Republicans ousted two young, Black lawmakers — Jones along with Rep. Justin Pearson, who represents parts of Memphis — for joining protestors at the state capitol who were demanding gun safety laws following a deadly mass shooting at an elementary school in Nashville. Additionally, a Tennessee court blocked House Bill 48, which would force Nashville — and only Nashville — to cut the size of its Metro Council in half. Two lawsuits argue that the law disenfranchises voters and violates the state constitution. [link removed]
An independent review of ballot tabulator machines in Maricopa County, Arizona found that tech issues during the November 2022 elections were due to heavier paper and longer ballots, not malfeasance. [link removed]
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) nominated Associate Judge Rowan D. Wilson to serve as chief judge on New York's highest court and Caitlin J. Halligan to fill Wilson's associate seat. If both are confirmed, the court will have a 4-3 left-leaning majority. [link removed]
On Friday, the Montana House passed Senate Bill 117 on a party-line vote, which would ban state, county or local officials from accepting private donations to fund election administration. It now heads to the desk of Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) for his signature. [link removed]
Also on Friday, civil rights organizations and a voter filed a lawsuit arguing that the commission districts of Jefferson County, Alabama are racially gerrymandered to "crack" and "pack" Black voters, violating the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. [link removed]
