Let's talk about what happened last Friday night: An anti-choice, Trump-appointed federal judge ruled to block the FDA's approval of mifepristone as soon as this Friday, April 14.

What this federal ruling means:

• This ruling means that as early as April 14, 2023, the FDA's approval of mifepristone could be blocked—effectively banning medication abortion as we know it.

How this could affect you:

• Since it's a federal ruling, it will affect people throughout the country, including in many states where abortion is protected.
• Access to medication abortion with mifepristone could become much more difficult—though medication abortion without the use of mifepristone may still be available to you.
• Mifepristone is also used for miscarriage mistreatment and can be a life-saving intervention in some cases. Losing access to this medication would be devastating.
• Many providers have experienced a surge of people seeking in-person care since the Dobbs decision. Blocking mifepristone means more people will be forced to seek care in person, severely exacerbating the situation, making it harder to obtain an appointment, and further extending wait times.

Fighting against a legal ruling is difficult, and we should expect many turns along the way—but we are working closely with our coalition partners to ensure abortion remains accessible. This case could end up at the Supreme Court, so we need to be ready for the fights ahead.
