A new bombshell report last week revealed that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been treated to luxury vacations by a billionaire Republican donor for over 20 years and failed to report or disclose these gifts.1
From private jets, to private resorts, and vacations on his yacht nearly every year — these actions have broken long-standing norms for judges’ conduct and ethics rules.
In a statement, Justice Thomas said the reason and rationale for this exemption was ‘personal hospitality from an old friend of 25 years.’ Justice Thomas has been on the Court for 30 years meaning that he began this relationship and received these sorts of gifts, after he was appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States.
This is not the first time that Clarence Thomas and his family have violated ethics rules. Last year, it was revealed that his wife, Ginni Thomas, personally pressured Trump's White House chief of staff to try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Despite his wife's active role in Trump's attempted coup, Justice Thomas failed to recuse himself in a case regarding the release of records related to January 6 and he cast the lone dissenting vote to keep the White House records hidden from the Jan. 6 select committee — including the texts that involved his wife.
In response, Alexandria joined a handful of other Democrats in calling Justice Thomas to resign.
For all of the Republican talk about a crime wave across the country, the crime wave is in the Republican Party. We are seeing breaking of the law by conservative members of the court, we are seeing a former President of the United States just indicted in recent days.
If it is Republicans that decide to protect those who are breaking the law, then they are the ones who are responsible for the decision — but we should not be complicit in that. We need to hold our systems accountable, and we should not refuse to do that for political reasons.
It is the House’s responsibility to pursue an investigation in the form of impeachment.
Alexandria will continue calling for justice for all and to hold our systems accountable. If you can, will you please chip in $3 today so that Alexandria can continue to call out corruption and ensure that no one — no matter how rich or powerful — is above the law?
In solidarity,
Team AOC
