Environmental protection in serious jeopardy.

Friend — we’ve just kicked off our 2023 Annual Fund Drive at LCV, and it comes at a critical time.

Here’s the situation: this summer, the government could go into default and risk a major economic crisis unless Congress agrees to allow the federal government to pay its past debts as they come due. That any members of Congress would even consider not allowing the U.S. to pay expenses already incurred is outrageous, especially given the global economic damage it could wreak.

With Democrats in control of the Senate, normally these extremist House Republican threats to gut environmental enforcement would be dead-on-arrival. But this time is different — there’s huge pressure to reach a deal, and any debt limit or budget deal requires at least some Republican support in both the House and Senate.

Every indication is that they will attempt to use these negotiations to force deep cuts to environmental protections. This is truly urgent — we need to scale up a campaign to ensure they don’t succeed. That means pressuring members of Congress all the way until a deal is passed… but the truth is, we don’t have the resources to pull that off right now. So we’re asking:

Can you chip in to support our 2023 Annual Fund Drive and bring us closer to our goal? I hope we can count on your support during this critical time. Please make a gift of just $5 to power our campaign to stop Republicans from gutting environmental protections.

Everything is on the table right now. Just a few weeks ago, House Republicans passed H.R.1 — a bill dubbed the “Polluters Over People Act.”

The bill was numbered “1” as a signal that it’s House Republicans’ top legislative priority — and it included a massive increase in oil and gas drilling, additional pipelines, gutting the Clean Air Act and other bedrock environmental laws, and sabotages affordable clean energy investments from the historic climate bill passed last year. It would also gut the power of communities to push back on projects that affect them — while blocking President Biden from being able to intervene.

This bill will not move in the Senate, but with budget negotiations looming, we expect Republicans to attempt to force many of those same handouts to Big Oil execs into the deal.

This is a big moment for the environmental movement. In November 2022, we turned out and elected even more environmental champions to the Senate in a surprise victory. But the margins are tight — Senate Republicans only need to pull away two votes to pass their anti-environmental agenda.

We can’t let that happen, Friend. We need to escalate our pressure campaign if we’re going to hold the line in the Senate. The future of our environment and our communities depends on what we do right now.

We can’t give up now. We’re counting on environmentalists like you to step up and stop Republicans’ anti-environmental agenda. Please make a gift today to help us reach our 2023 Annual Fund goal. Even $5 helps when you give today.

Thanks so much for your support.

Onward,

Gene Karpinski
